| SIDC HIRING AND
SUPERVISORY PROCEDURES Staten Island
Day Camp only hires as counselors individuals who are of college age or
beyond. Our counselors are typically college students or individuals
who have completed college and are working in the field of public or private
education.
We do not hire high school students as counselors!
Furthermore, we screen our applicants carefully during our interview
process. The four senior staff members who interview candidates have
considerable experience in this area. In addition, the Executive
Director and a Director have extensive experience in the interviewing of
teachers and school administrators prior to their retirements.
All SIDC camp staff must undergo a background check at the state and federal
levels.
All counselors are required to attend two orientation sessions prior to the
first day of camp, which is organized and run by the Executive Director who
is assisted by the camp Directors and Asst. Directors. All counselors
receive a staff manual and the agendas for these meetings include a wide
range of topics. Camper safety and counselors rules of conduct,
however, are major themes of both sessions.
In addition, mandated counselor meetings are
held weekly after the campers have been dismissed and again camper safety,
camp rules and counselor conduct are a part of every meeting.
Finally, the SIDC senior staff includes an
Executive Director, two Directors and six Asst. Directors who are dedicated
to closely supervising counselors and campers from 7:30 A.M. to 5:30
P.M. for all camp activities. All senior staff are full-time
staff members during the summer camp season. It is doubtful that
any day camp has a senior staff that equals that of SIDC.
